Building shared understanding, creative ideas and potential solutions to complex challenges
Enabling engagement between researchers and decision-makers is critical to delivering effective policy solutions. One powerful way to do this is a RESET Network dialogue.
These dialogues bring together a group of diverse people with a wide range of perspectives that can provide a basis for more constructive and informed discussion on challenging issues. The group aims to:
- develop a shared understanding of the issues and current knowledge
- identify creative ideas to address these issues
- develop mutual trust among participants
- develop potential effective, efficient and fair solutions to the identified challenge
- pose well-formulated research questions.
Participants are selected based on their knowledge and their characteristics. Each individual attends in their private capacity, not as a representative of their organisation. The total number of participants is kept low to allow in-depth discussion.
Dialogue groups do not aim to create consensus among participants though consensus on some issues is often reached.
In 2025, before the RESET Network was launched, Climate Action Teams and Motu Research convened experts from Chile and Aotearoa New Zealand to build a connection between climate modelers. This dialogue group discussed economic modeling challenges and what was needed to develop national mitigation targets. Read more
